CERES user guide
Safety
CERES uses an immersive headset display, an outward camera view and visual status changes. The headset narrows or replaces normal vision, and the display or camera feed may flash or flicker. Complete a study-specific risk assessment and read the Meta Quest safety guidance before using CERES.
Flicker, flashing and visual symptoms
The headset display, camera feed and transitions between immersive and passthrough views may flash, flicker or change rapidly. These effects can provoke symptoms in people with photosensitive conditions, including people who have never previously had a seizure or blackout.
Stop the task immediately and remove the headset if the demonstrator experiences a seizure, loss of awareness, involuntary movement, eye or muscle twitching, altered vision, severe dizziness, disorientation, nausea or eye pain. Do not resume the capture while symptoms continue. Follow the study's emergency procedure and seek medical assistance when appropriate.
Anyone with a history of seizures, loss of awareness or another condition affected by flashing light should follow the headset manufacturer's guidance and consult a qualified medical professional before using the headset.
Limited view of the physical space
A headset is a vision obstruction. Passthrough and boundary features are aids, not a substitute for an unobstructed view. The camera view can lag behind the physical world, provide a narrower field of view, distort depth or fail to show a person, pet, object, floor hazard or overhead hazard.
- Clear the floor, work surface and full reach area before the headset goes on. Check for furniture, cables, sharp or hot objects, doors, windows, stairs, low ceilings, fans, people and pets.
- Keep the task inside the assessed capture area and maintain the headset boundary. Do not rely on the boundary to detect every hazard.
- Remove the headset before walking between areas, using stairs, changing the capture position or looking around to confirm that the area is clear.
- Do not use CERES while operating a vehicle or hazardous machinery.
- Stop immediately if the physical scene, passthrough view, boundary or task position is uncertain.
Solo capture
Solo has no capture director watching the scene or able to call a stop. Use a stationary, cleared work area with required objects already within safe reach. Do not perform a Solo task that requires walking, reaching towards an unseen hazard or managing a risk that needs a second person. Have another person present whenever the study's risk assessment requires one.
Before every capture
- Confirm that the demonstrator has read the safety information and is fit to use the headset under the study protocol.
- Clear and light the capture area, then check the floor, full reach area and overhead space.
- Confirm that passthrough and the headset boundary behave as expected, while treating both as incomplete views of the physical space.
- Agree a stop signal. In paired capture, the capture director must stop for any safety concern. In Solo, the demonstrator must stop and remove the headset whenever the scene or their condition is uncertain.
- Take breaks required by the headset manufacturer and the study. Recording integrity never takes priority over safety.
